AK, viol, voc; Ron Block, guit, banjo, voc; Dan Tyminski, guit, mandolin, voc; Jerry Douglas, dobro; Barry Bales, bass, voc; Larry Atamanuik, dr, perc.

Recorded live at the Louisville Palace in Louisville, Kentucky, this album gives the listener a good sense of what intelligent, ears –wide-open country music can do today. Krauss may have been the lead figure in this group but all five musicians –drummer Atamanuik is added on some cuts-- were star quality performers in their own right and, even better, they listened to each other when they played. The result is lively, melodious music making with a good deal of variety, supportive ensemble work, and some killer solos. Krauss plays fiddle straight out of blue grass and sings like a modern day joining of Dolly Parton and I’m not quite sure who, but closer to Judy Collins or maybe even Joni Mitchell. The guitar solos –Block? Block and Tyminski?—are solid and Jerry Douglas’s dobro work is outstanding. Douglas even has a solo spread: his rendition of “A Tribute to Peador O’Donnell” segues without break into an up tempo “Monkey Let the Hogs Out,” but it is his bent note echo phrases in the ensemble pieces that is a knockout. Do you want to hear how good this group is together? Play the last three songs on this two-CD album. “Oh, Atlanta” is a rouser, with Krauss singing, guitar solos (I think) by both guitarists and a short dobro break. Underneath, Atamanuik’s drums kick it along. Then comes Krauss singing the Appalachian spiritual “Down to the River to Pray.” She starts it alone. Second time through, Dan, Ron and Barry join in harmony and so on through the remaining two choruses –no instrumental backing, just voices. (Krauss joined Ricky Skaggs and Doc Watson to sing the same song on The Three Pickers album, one of my favorite C&W albums.) The album closes with a ballad, “There Is a Reason,” Krauss singing backed by the two guitarists singing harmony, and the whole band joining in on instruments. I like bluegrass a lot but not much contemporary country western music but it would be hard not to enjoy this infectious music played these talented performers.

I love Blue Grass music and my brother had said Alison " Sings like an Angel",so after reading many reviews chose these two CDs. Was very excited to hear them. All the instruments and Dan and others singing was fine, but couldn''t hear a word that she was so singing. Not even her voice! I know one was a concert CD, but have had concert recordings before and never a problem. Very disappointed. Didn''t pay just to hear an occasionally breathy voice whispering, making one or two sounds, without understanding what was being said. Have never had a problem like this and have bought. A multitude of music dating from vinyl, 8 tracks, cassettes,,CDs, etc. Won''t stop me from buying, but will gift these to my brother and am sure he will love them. Just. Not to my liking. If I compare to, Emmy Lou, and she has Blue Grass roots, can hear her, no problem. Roses in the Snow and Blue Kentucky Girl. So different.

Asked if I play any musical instruments? My most common remark is-Yes I play the the stereo, sometimes better than others. Without going into my 40 years of adding to and building upon my instrument, I generally add to my phrase: But I play that very well. When I take my instrument and add to it one of the most unique voices and separate instrumentalists, in their own right, I find myself with an album that can only sound, the way I play it. My instrument has evolved over the years, from 1800 foot reel to reel tapes and vinyl, the CD Headaches of the ''80''s, to the I want it now generation of MP3. My instrument has only failed me once, and it was really nothing that a good cleaning couldn''t fix. With the event of the Alison Krauss and Union Station, MP3 only release, I feel that my instrument has taken me to a level of music, that only myself and a handful of friends will have the opportunity to enjoy. I really enjoy the sound that Alison can manufacture, along with of millions of audio files, but I know that my sound and acoustics is taking me right to front row center. If you are a Krauss fan, this one is for you. Unfortunately if you are still in the MP3 and earbuds fase of listening, you are missing out on; This MP3 ONLY release, Is a sure joy to listen to, as our digital earache moves us closer to vinyl?

Gorgeous singing, virtuosic playing, well-written songs, and a lively crowd come together in this 2-CD set recorded live in Louisville, Kentucky. Alison Krauss is credited with crossing over from country-bluegrass to a wider audience, but I''d go one further and say she has the power to bring you back over with her, even if you never thought you liked country or bluegrass music. I got hooked on the ballads you''d find on the "Forget About It" and "New Favorite" albums (Stay, Maybe, New Favorite, etc.), which Alison sings heartbreakingly beautifully, and with the good taste of simple accompaniment. Those songs were so good that I was persuaded to listen to other Union Station songs. Some jangled my non-country mind at first, but after another listen, I could hear what incredibly accomplished instrumentalists and vocalists they all are! For one thing, Alison is not only a great singer, but a great fiddler! Jerry Douglas is a real master of the Dobro (a type of guitar specially designed to be louder and more resonant). Dan Tyminski''s singing, especially in The Boy Who Wouldn''t Hoe Corn, is haunting--O, those blues-y notes and ornamentations! You''ll love the imagery of the lyrics for Ghost in This House. But I hate to leave out Ron Block and Barry Bales, because their playing and singing are excellent, too, in solo and as part of the incredible harmonizing. And it''s really fun to hear the live crowd having such a good time!

As a general rule, I don''t care for recordings of live performances as much as studio recordings. This is usually because the crowd noise interferes with my enjoyment of the music. That is not the case here. In fact, it is one of the best live performances I have ever heard recorded.

I was also not too familiar with Alison Kraus and Union Station beyond being names I have heard. This was my first recording of theirs. It was wonderful.

Some of the music is old fashioned bluegrass and some is more in the country line of things. Both are done with superb skill in terms of singing and instrumentals. In fact, the band seems to be one of the most competent group of professional musicians working together today. Each comes to the fore at various times and each does a wonderful job.

Purchased this CD after having previously owned it but annoyingly lost the first CD (of two). I think the discs are compiled well with a good arrangement and order of songs. Alison Krauss'' long partnership with Union Station has produced many great songs, and this disc allows you to listen to them in the most natural way possible, live. She has an beautiful soothing voice which the band complements nicely with some backing vocals. However there are also some purely instrumental songs and also others where Union Station takes the lead, you get a lovely blend. You do get nice little introductions by the band and random comments from the audience which just makes it more enjoyable to listen to. I think it''s good value for money and the mp3 downloads are immensely useful when you''re not using the actual CDs. A few personal favourite tracks include; When You Say Nothing At All, Forget About It, Stay, New Favourite but the list could go on.

I first heard Alison Krauss on, of all things, a hi-fi demonstration disc, which included "New Favorite" with its outstanding production. At the time, I wouldn''t have known Alison Krauss if I''d fallen over her, but I bought the CD, expecting a typical collection of pop diva stuff, one good song and the rest filler. To my surprise, it was bluegrass, which I''ve always enjoyed. So I tried this one. As I said, stunning. This Girl Can Sing. B''gosh, this girl can sing! If she sang "Baa, baa, black sheep", I think I''d be tempted to buy it. Not only that, but she can also play a mean fiddle. And to cap it all, she''s part of a band of outstanding ability. The result is an absolute aural treat. Even "New Favorite" is sung with almost complete fidelity to the original. And the final number "Oh, Atlanta" just about brings the house down. Alison Krauss is a good-looking doll with so much talent that she can just stand and sing and has no need to prance around in her underwear, as apparently do other popular lady vocalists. She also comes across as a pleasant, unaffected person. Highest recommendation. P.S. Does anyone have any idea why, in "Oh, Atlanta", she pronounces "Georgia" as something like "Chug-a-chew"?

I recently picked up on this band when looking for more information on Dan Taminski, having been very impressed by his performance on the Crossroads Festival DVD. Imagine my surprise when I discovered he was in a band with Jerry Douglas whose Dobro playing is such a delight on the BBC Transatlantic Sessions. I duly booked to see them in London in November and downloaded their new album, ''Paper Airplane''. It is absolutely superb hence my purchase of this earlier, live album. This is also very good. It''s a bit more ''country'' than ''Airplane'' to my untutored ears but has the bonus of some great instrumental tracks. The sound balance is really good for a live acoustic album. The only downside is overlong intros and outros; how much applause do I need to hear? A really accomplished band that I wish I had discovered earlier. I think the ''country'' repertoire from this album may have been a barrier for me but I''m glad I got over it.
