Description

Product Description

This is the most comprehensive book on the paintings and frescoes of Florence ever undertaken, with more than 2,000 beautifully reproduced artworks from the city''s great museums and churches-produced in the same manner as BD&L''s The Louvre and The Vatican.

Every painted work that is on display in the Uffizi Gallery, The Pitti Palace, the Accademia, and the Duomo is included in the book, plus many or most of the works from 28 of the city''s other magnificent museums and churches. The research and text are by Ross King (best-selling author), Anja Grebe (author or The Louvre and The Vatican), Cristina Acidini (former Superintendent of the public museums of Florence) and Msgr. Timothy Verdon (Director of the artworks for the Archdiocese of Florence).

Review

"...an art lover''s dream come true--a collection of nearly 2,000 images that includes every painting and fresco on display in the Uffizi, the Galleria Palatina of the Pitti Palace, the Accademia and the Duomo, and works from 28 additional museums and churches....It''s fascinating to see these treasures of the Western world collected in one volume, with page after page of magnificence, including the works of Uccello, da Vinci, Correggio, Titian, Michelangelo and more. You won''t have a better tour unless you visit the city itself--and even then, reading this book first would be worthwhile."― BookPage

"For 800 years Florence, Italy, has been a sacred city whose very walls breathe beauty. In vivid essays and more than 2,000 lush images, this glorious book covers the great collections of the Uffizi, the Pitti Palace, the Accademia and the Duomo, plus key works in 28 of the city''s additional museums and churches. The lively text explains Florentine politics, patronage, street life, banking, international trade and the effect of its wars, plagues and religious squabbles. Fascinating."― Star Tribune

"You needn''t travel to Florence to tour the masterpieces created by some of the world''s greatest artists. "Florence: The Paintings & Frescoes: 1250 to 1743" by Ross King and Anja Grebe brings more than 2,000 images of them to you, along with a comprehensive guide"― The Sacramento Bee

The paintings and frescoes of the birthplace of the Renaissance get a lavish, full-color treatment in this new book from Canadian historian and novelist Ross King, whose previous work includes "Brunelleschi''s Dome: The Story of the Great Cathedral in Florence."...If you''re looking for a gorgeous coffee-table book, this one is hard to beat."― Austin American-Statesman

"The next best thing to a Tuscan sightseeing trip is a tour through the pages of "Florence: The Paintings & Frescoes, 1250-1743"...which opens the doors of the Uffizi, the Accademia, the Duomo and countless Florentine churches to the armchair traveler."― Newsday

This book is worth 4 times more than I paid for it.Gratefully, I found this book Which is so amazing and beautiful.I can tell it was put together by someone who also has a great passion for Italian art. I also have the Louvre and The Vatican by Anja Grebe, she and Ross King have done an amazing job with this book. This book also comes in a sturdy box with the same Botticelli Venus picture on it.If you love Italian Art, you should not be without this book.

After a recent trip to Florence my wife and I wanted an opportunity to relive our visit by looking at published images of what we had seen.

The quality of the images in this book is much better than any photos we were able to take, and there are so many images included in the book that we were able to see only briefly or from a distance or not at all.

How to feel less dumb about Italian art! Or just look like an artsy type with this absolute tome on your coffee table. And if all else fails you can throw it at big bugs. It’s a big book! Lots of photos. I didn’t care much for the tiny little detail pics of which there were too many in my opinion. Big book, small photos. Why? Another peeve was each chapter begins with a gorgeous big photo of sometimes a detail of a large painting or fresco or whatever and you would just have to continue through the chapter before you found the painting it matched and then could read the caption with the title of the artwork. Yes I am nitpicking. But it was annoying to me.

I have acquired The Louve, Vatican and the above. However, regardless how much I love art I am not foolish enough to pay over £70 for The Prado. ( plus, my wife would cut them off ) Florence is an absolutely amazing book. I admit you could go back and forward to the Louve and still not cover it but you might see the works your looking for. Now this is were the books are totally different. Florence has its five main museums, obviously the great Uffizi but also twenty-eight additional museums and churches. I am not going to list the Artist''s here but they obviously cover Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Titian Caravaggio and a great deal more. Even painters that are not that well known. Artist''s that sent me over to an encyclopaedia for even more information on them because some of the work is beautiful. So, to sum this book up you have 2,000 painted works from all the notable art institutions. ( Now I Cannot Be Wrong......Because I Read It At The Back Of The Bloody Box!) But seriously. This is a very very beautiful book which should give you many many days to study and also read. But again the same old adage applies: where are you going to put it. Florence weighs over 4Kg, not as bad as Michelangelo''s book just over 5Kg but also hard to find a home for, hard to move and a definite broken toe if dropped on the foot ) " But Good Heavens Worth It " Plus like me, you might want Florence, Louve, Vatican, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci and a load of beautiful Taschen''s. ( For some reason I am not very popular in my house ) Beautiful Book and Very well packaged by Amazon. Looked after as if it was there own. Great care was taken so if the box took a bash she will be o.k THANK YOU AMAZON. DBS x

Everything that other reviewers mentioned is true. It is a well written book with a lot of material about the most important museums and churches of Florence presented in chronological order. A small minus is the relation of the descriptions to the specific pictures not being done in the most reader friendly way but this is not enough in my opinion to deduct a star from the review. It''s a book very worth having if someone is interested in Florence Art.
