One of the most beloved and trusted mindfulness teachers in America offers a lifeline for difficult times: the RAIN meditation, which awakens our courage and heart

Tara Brach is an in-the-trenches teacher whose work counters today''s ever-increasing onslaught of news, conflict, demands, and anxieties--stresses that leave us rushing around on auto-pilot and cut off from the presence and creativity that give our lives meaning.

In this heartfelt and deeply practical book, she offers an antidote: an easy-to-learn four-step meditation that quickly loosens the grip of difficult emotions and limiting beliefs. Each step in the meditation practice ( Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Nurture) is brought to life by memorable stories shared by Tara and her students as they deal with feelings of overwhelm, loss, and self-aversion, with painful relationships, and past trauma--and as they discover step-by-step the sources of love, forgiveness, compassion, and deep wisdom alive within all of us.

I returned this book with the smallest print I have ever seen in a book. I got it on audible. However, I didn''t want it on audible. Book publishers, and authors, of best selling books are going to have to offer large print versions of them more, and more. I suggest Tara Brach become a front-runner of this as she wants us to be kind to ourselves. I would not have been kind to my eye health trying to read this tiny writing. Offer large print versions please. Many of us will be happy to pay more to see the print. Thank you.

I highly recommend this book because I feel that it represents in a very clear, succinct fashion the true core of what Tara teaches. Tara''s teachings have helped me to become more aware, kinder, more loving and in greater control of my life. I’ve read three of her books and I always have to take breaks. I’ve cried sooo much and have honestly become a different person practicing what she writes. I love that anyone would be able to understand it as it isn’t religious, just beautifully written.

Radical Compassion equips you with the tools and skills to face the strongest of emotions. While many teachers talk about practicing compassion in an abstract manner, Tara makes it tangible with clear step-by-step instructions to implement compassion as a practice. It''s the most practical guide that I have come across.

Tara demonstrates the power of RAIN and how it can wash off the thick clay covering our essential being and heal us. She also shows how the practice of RAIN meditation opens the door to compassion beyond mindfulness.

In Radical Compassion, Tara does an excellent job debunking a huge trap—a common misunderstanding between cognitive analysis and somatic awareness that often leads many people astray. She provides clear instructions that many people look for to take the first step.

The Questions and Responses at the end of each chapter effectively anticipate the confusion in the reader’s mind and provides succinct answers to help us on our journey to healing. Tara is addressing the unasked questions of our time—answers to which can bring healing to our world.

In a nutshell, Radical Compassion helps you learn how to be human and enjoy life. Tara’s genius is her humanity. Timely wisdom shared eloquently with love and care.

Why have we lost compassion for ourselves? Radical Compassion by Tara Brach teaches us how to use the RAIN method to control our emotions. Sadly, many of those emotions leave us powerless. This book provides the reader with a whole new way of recognizing our limiting beliefs. Many of these beliefs arise from early childhood experiences of fear and wounding. Radical Compassion offers this simple method for moving beyond those limitations to find compassion in our hearts:

R-Recognize What Is Happening

A-Allow Life to be Just As It Is

I-Investigate with a Gentle, Curious Attention

N-Nurture with Loving Presence.

Tara Brach teaches us how to step away from our negative beliefs about ourselves and others.  That allows us to experience a positive transformation through her RAIN exercises.

What I enjoyed most about the book, beyond the method, was the stories she shared of those she has mentored. This simple method of sharing these transformations teaches us that:

Our culture continually tries to define us as good/bad, right/wrong, or superior/inferior.

Those judgments invoke shame in how we feel about ourselves. That shame affects how we treat each other. It influences how much we earn, what we consume, and the shape of our body. In addition, it exerts influence on how we express creativity and our spiritual or religious beliefs.

Throughout the book, the author leads us on a path to integration and resilience as we reach the "Nurture" step of RAIN. Readers can find healing in her words. "No matter how trapped you''ve been in emotions like fear or shame, strengthening your inner resources can help change your brain, heal your heart, and evolve your consciousness."

If you long for attention, safety, acceptance, connection, understanding, and love, you owe it to yourself to explore the RAIN method. Our brains are constantly evolving. As a result, we each have a capacity for mindful thinking and compassion in how we view others. Use the exercises in Radical Compassion to see yourself and others more clearly to cultivate a more forgiving heart. Allow her to guide you so you can live your true potential.

1. There are teachers who talk about their experiences of enlightenment. Compassionate as they may be, they can seem removed from us. They are enlightened; we are not. As a teacher, Tara is more of a spiritual friend. Like the rest of us, she is sometimes caught in trances common to our human condition, and she has found openings to love, awareness, and compassion that are reliable and unfailing. She shares them in Radical Compassion.

2. Her method (RAIN) is straightforward and clear. She offers numerous examples of applications. She anticipates and addresses difficulties and questions. She knows the method and the principles that make it work. That comes through in every paragraph. Her presentation is masterful.

3. Tara brings us together. In most meditative traditions, wrestling with our minds and emotions is a private affair. Even if we meditate in a group, we are solitary in our internal struggles. But what a refreshing option to include each other in our practice of RAIN! No longer alone, we have an opportunity to listen compassionately and be held in loving awareness as we are listened to in return. What better way to learn compassion than to give and receive it? Tara provides a link to an audio recording that guides us through the RAIN practice with a partner. It’s like having Tara facilitate a heartfelt meeting of friends. What if we all did this? That would be radical indeed.

I love Tara Brach and this book was amazing. I became more deeply aware of how to deepen self compassion and saw ways that surprised me where I am cut off from others. This is a book filled with stories that touched my heart and helped to drive home the material that she is presenting. It''s "hands on" with exercises and different ways to apply her RAIN process to take the book''s content into the body where it can be fully lived. There''s so much in this book that applies to the times we are in right now. How sensitive people can offer compassion without becoming overwhelmed and the immediate need for all of us to embody compassion. I highly recommend it.

Sorry to all the fans of Tara Brach, this just wasn''t for me in more ways than one. I got halfway through the book and realised I was reading the same thing over and over. I genuinely feel that RAIN could have been explained in a blog post or two - to force it into a whole book was a slog for the reader, and clearly just a way for Brach to capitalise on her practice. I also think the neuroscience explanations are too simplistic. Much of the explanations are borrowed from other well-known trauma practitioners e.g. Dan Seigel, which makes me think that she has nothing new to bring to the table, and even the explanations she chooses to use are considerably dumbed down. I thought as a psychologist, Brach would have the capacity to explain complex terms to her audience, but it looks like she prefers to gloss over the science and any kind of complexity whatsoever. I was looking for something radical, and this was not it. It was RAIN on every single page, every single chapter, which made me forget this this was supposed to be about ''compassion'' to begin with. It felt more like a meditation than a learning experience, which was not what I was expecting. Very disappointed.

Tara Brach is the real deal. I''m not usually one for gimmicky anti-anxiety remedies but Tara presents a whole new way of looking at anxiety and pain and shows you how you can change your relationship with it by accepting the pain for what it is and being kinder to yourself. I have used the practice of RAIN, as described in the book, and it has worked for me. Not a cure, but definitely lots of food for thought and offers a new way of looking at yourself and the world we live in. Be kinder to yourself and your ''demons''. Highly recommend this book.

My therapist had told me to try and show myself some more compassion and to try using the RAIN technique. Having never heard of RAIN before I instantly looked for a book to explain it... And this book was a wonderful way of discovering what it all entails. It''s written in an easy to understand way and its broken down well. The technique is definitely very useful and a good way of being able to let go and accepting who you are and how you feel. I''ve also found the author has a website with useful info on it and definitely recommend taking a look.
