Product Description

A #1 New York Times bestseller, this innovative and wildly funny read-aloud by award-winning humorist/actor B.J. Novak will turn any reader into a comedian.

You might think a book with no pictures seems boring and serious. Except . . . here’s how books work. Everything written on the page  has to be said by the person reading it aloud. Even if the words say . . .

BLORK. Or BLUURF.

Even if the words are a preposterous song about eating ants for breakfast, or just a list of astonishingly goofy sounds like BLAGGITY BLAGGITY and GLIBBITY GLOBBITY.

Cleverly irreverent and irresistibly silly,  The Book with No Pictures is one that kids will beg to hear again and again. (And parents will be happy to oblige.)

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—The actor (and writer, producer, and director) has penned his first picture book, but can it be called a picture book when there are no pictures? Entering the field of unique interactive books begging to be opened, including Hervé Tullet''s Press Here (Chronicle, 2011) and Adam Lehrhaupt''s Warning: Do Not Open This Book! (S. & S., 2013), this title will instantly intrigue children. Upon opening the book, readers are drawn in ("Here is how books work: everything the words say, the person reading the book has to say. No matter what."). What follows is an uproariously raucous time, with readers being forced to utter nonsense words ("blork," "bluurf") and phrases that will have young listeners in stitches ("And my head is made of blueberry pizza."). Admittedly, there are no illustrations, but Novak has employed the use of various sizes of black typeface with expansive white space and color to highlight some of the text. This book is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, and it''s perfect for one-on-one sharing with a parent or caregiver. Expect requests for repeated readings.—Michele Shaw, Quail Run Elementary School, San Ramon, CA

Review

"Conceptually radical . . . making the refreshing and contrarian case that words alone have sensory and imaginative vibrancy to spare."—Mark Levine, The New York Times Book Review

* "“This book may not have pictures, but it''s sure to inspire lots of conversations—and laughs . . . A riotously fresh take on breaking the fourth wall.”"— Kirkus, starred review

"This book is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, and it’s perfect for one-on-one sharing with a parent or caregiver. Expect requests for repeated readings."— School Library Journal

"Actor Novak’s expert sense of comic timing is on full display in his first picture book . . . sure to deliver big laughs."— Publishers Weekly

"Listeners will be tickled by hearing adults say ridiculous things . . . The comic pacing and foolproof theatrics ensure a wild and silly trip through the pages for everyone."— The Horn Book

"This picture book with no pictures knows a thing or two about both books and kid-friendly comedy . . . Once children get the joke, they''ll want to play it on as many of their grownups as possible."— The Bulletin of the Center for Children''s Books

"Unlike any of the children''s books you read growing up."— Bustle.com

"Will have little ones laughing and finding a new appreciation for words."— Entertainment Weekly

"A perfectly-pitched tool for parental humiliation and childish glee."— The Boston Globe

A surprise hit with my two 3-year-olds

I flipped through this book before wrapping it up for Christmas, and I was a little skeptical that my kids would dig it. When I pulled it out at bedtime tonight and said “This is a Book With No Pictures,” my son whined, as if on cue. However, to my great surprise, they both started giggling hysterically from the very first “BLORK,” and did not stop until the book was finished. It was like magic!

You will notice that many of the one-star reviews are from adults who determined that the book was stupid without field-testing it on an actual kid. Big mistake.

A lot of the other one-star reviews are from people who object to speaking of a hippo named “Boo Boo Butt.” Tough crowd...

I''m just appalled that this book has so many raving reviews. I bought it to give as a gift to friends kid but I just can''t. It''s just incredibly stupid idea and reads as though an excuse letter written to adults trying to explain why it''s so stupid... And there are only 3 or 4 places where the book actually has adult say something supposedly funny (because of non-existing gibberish sounds)... My thought on this book is that no parent needs to spend this or any kind of money in order to make silly noises at their kids. This is just stupid and it''s beyond me how it''s possible that kids love this book. It makes me wonder what other interests kids are exposed to or what other books they are being read, and the type of interaction they get from their adults if they love this type of book so much.

I bought this book for a Christmas present for my son who just turned 4 y/o a few weeks before Christmas. I thought it was a goofy/fun read, but wasn''t sure how he''d feel about it not having any pictures. When I first told him the book didn''t have any pictures his reaction was exactly what you''d expect from a newly 4 y/o.... "I don''t want to read that"... But I had half expected this and calmly sat down on the couch and started reading it out loud. It didn''t take long at all before he was jumping up and down laughing his head off as I read the book out loud giving the pages the over the top voice it deserves. Immediately after I finished reading my son requested that I read it again. That''s actually been his response every time it''s been read to him. He just can''t get enough of this book. It''s a great book to read to kids, but it does require it to be read out loud to achieve the true brilliance of this book. I strongly recommend reading it with some of your own nuances put into it as opposed to doing it dry. You''ll have a lot more fun reading it that way and your kid(s) will be roaring with laughter as you seem to have a crisis in reading the parts of the book that (as a "responsible adult") the book ''makes'' you read.
Definitely a great purchase and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys hearing their kid(s) laugh.

I first saw The Book with No Pictures on a Facebook post and I thought it was so cool I just had to get it for my daughter. At first when I started reading it to her, she is almost 4, I thought that she may not like it as much as I had hoped. But once I got the hang of reading it, and was able to really get into it emotionally and use different voices and such, she really really enjoyed it! By the end of the book she was super excited and ran to tell daddy all bout the silly book with no pictures! I think this book is an awesome book to get kids to realize that books can be fun no matter if you have something to look at or not. Definitely a cute little book and I love that we added it to our book collection!

~Thanx!~

I NEVER would have bought this book for my 4.5 year olds because it looked idiotic, but it was read to them at camp and they came home requesting it (okay BEGGING that I get it for them). I''m not one to say no if my kids are interested in a book, so I got it, read through it myself and thought "OMG, what have I done?" because it was right up the alley of preschoolers loving gross words and silly things and I wasn''t sure I wanted to encourage that. HOWEVER, we''ve now been reading the book together for three months, they still find it hysterical, and here''s the kicker--because there are no pictures, my kids have been very interested in the words on the page (silly as those words are) and by god, my 4.5 year old twins have been learning to read and spell from this book. We started with the word "no"--they thought it was tremendously exciting to find the word on the pages (it''s on almost every page), then the word "book" (many of the pages repeat that "this is a book with no pictures"--and then they began to compete with each other seeing who could remember how to spell "Boo Boo Butt" first (I''m not kidding). Now, "boo boo butt" was not what I had in mind when teaching my children to read, but it''s really true that kids are motivated by what they''re interested in--and this book has spurred their interest in learning to read and spell. Now, for the people completely put off by how silly this book is, please keep in mind that it''s probably not the only book on any kid''s bookshelf, so just because it''s not high quality literature doesn''t mean there''s not a place for it and one silly book probably won''t ruin a child if it''s one of many books the child is having read to them. Obviously, if you''re against your kids using words like boo boo butt, don''t buy it. But if you love to hear the kids you love laugh out loud repeatedly (no matter how dumb you think the book is) and if they sit in your lap, looking at the words, there is a chance they will use this book to get interested in what the words on the page actually are and what they say. I really (REALLY!) didn''t anticipate that this book would start my kids into full on excitement about reading, but it did. So despite my not being impressed by it when I first read it to myself, I was won over after witnessing my twins'' response to it.

I saw a video clip of B. J. Novak reading this to children my son''s age and ordered it the same day. We received it just after his 6th birthday. I thought he would like it. I was wrong. He absolutely LOVES it. He is practically obsessed with it. After the first few misleadingly boring lines, his face fell and I could see his eyes begin to glaze over. Then the funny words began and he was hooked. This is now his favorite book. He even reads it to himself and likes to change volume and emphasis each time, laughing hysterically when a new funny sound is created. Overall, awesome.

As I turned the last page with tears rolling down our cheeks from laughter - I heard the phrase "read it again Mummy" By the end of the second reading my son declared it "the funniest book ever" and he has a lot of books and has read and been read to a lot. Buy it, you won''t regret it and by the end you too will probably be crying with laughter. My child is aged 7 years.

Just a brilliant and lovely book - I bought an extra one for the school because it really does celebrate the beauty and power of reading to children. A great favourite in our house, I could not recommend this more - particularly as a tool in encouraging your child to develop a love of books and reading. Worth seeing the video of the author reading the book to understand how it was intended to be read aloud. Had my little ones rolling about with laughter at the (very slightly) risqué/cheeky language.
